Travellers love to fantasize, picturing themselves at their destination and formulating all the necessary plans to make their adventure something extraordinary. When visiting an unknown place, the first thing one wants to do is see the characteristic sights—in other words, the works of architecture and the street markets. However, it’s never a bad idea to look a little further and break away from the same old same old.
As an international city and tourism hotspot, Barcelona offers an infinite number of attractions to suit every taste. In addition to architecture and bazaars, theatres and cinemas form a significant part of the city’s artistic offering, which is well worth discovering. That’s why we’re taking this opportunity to introduce you to the most prestigious theatres and outstanding cinemas in the city, where you and your family can enjoy some time together.
Gran Teatre del Liceu
Located on la Rambla in Barcelona, this is the city’s oldest theatre, specializing in opera. Its prestige stems from the fact that, for nearly two centuries—since 1847—its stage has been graced by the world’s greatest opera singers. Although it has been a gathering place of the Catalonian bourgeoisie for many years, the theatre today offers a stable season of operas, as well as a diversity of activities targeted at audiences of every kind.
National Theatre of Catalonia
Located in the Eixample, a district in the heart of the city, the National Theatre of Catalonia is associated with the country’s theatrical tradition, promoting dance, opera and puppetry. If you’re travelling with small children, they’ll love the entertainment, and you’ll enjoy an ample variety of events, while marvelling at the theatre’s architecture.
Teatre Lliure
There are two locations: one on the hillside of Montjuïc and another in Gràcia. The theatre is characteristic of the performing arts it presents, offering a contemporary program aimed at representing reality through a diversity of artistic ideas. The calendar is full and varied, so you’ll always find something going on there.
Cinematheque of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia
If you like indie films and enjoy spending hours in front of the silver screen, there’s no doubt that you’ll love this library of film. Located in the Plaça de Salvador Seguí, this cultural institution is devoted to showing and conserving both classic and contemporary films. It’s also very affordable. The films are usually presented in their original versions with subtitles.
Cine Verdi
Located on Torrijos street in the Gràcia area of Barcelona, the programming is a bit more commercial, although they also show indie and European films, all in their original version. The cinema offers a wide variety of films at a good price.
Without a doubt, setting aside a day of your holiday to visit one of these places will help you learn a little more about Barcelona culture.
