Where to watch Original Language Movies in Barcelona

Going to the movies in Barcelona could be a tricky matter for foreigners who are not familiar with the local language. When screening in the city, movies are generally dubbed into Spanish. However, since voice is also part of the performance, there are some movie theaters that project the film in its original language, they are known as “Cines V.O” (V.O. movie theaters) or cines versión original (original version movie theaters). Although there are only a few movie theaters, there is a wide variety of proposals. You will find European titles, Catalan titles, independent productions, classics, silent films and the most recent releases.
Barcelona movie theaters with subtitles:
1. Cine Verdi. It is known as one of the most emblematic movie theaters of the city. It opened in 1981 and since then it has offered its audience all types of movies in their original language. You will find films in English and other languages, including Catalan, with Spanish subtitles. In the Verdi kids room the children can watch the premieres of animated movies. 2. Balmes Multicine V.O. is part of the “Grupo Balaña”. The theatre offers movie spaces with modern designs and frequently projects the greatest and most striking productions in their original language. This movie theater is the most appropriate if you like to watch popular culture stories, and it projects the latest European films. Undoubtedly it deserves a visit.
3. Yelmo Icaria. In Barcelona you will come across several movie theaters pertaining to this chain. Not all of them do offer original version movies. The movie theaters located inside Centro Comercial El Centre at Vila Port Olimpic, located in calle Salvador Espriu project some films in original language. The Yelmo Icaria Castelldefels movie theater, located in Centro Comercial Ànec Blau also offers this option. These movie theaters project premiers and big productions.
4. Filmoteca de Catalunya. If you are interested in history and culture, do visit this place! Filmoteca de Catalunya was born over thirty years ago with the purpose of preserving, researching and spreading audiovisual works. You will be able to watch historical films, silent films and even representatives of modern cinema It is located in the Plaça Salvador Segui.
5. Cinemes Girona. This is the place for those who love independent films. It is located in calle Girona and offers European, international and Catalan films. Film festivals and events take place at Cinemes Girona. It is always a good idea to check the website and you may enjoy a special event during your visit.
6. Meliés Cinemes. It welcomes the audience in completely renovated rooms since 2015. Though it seems to have a recent history, these spaces have been available to the spectators since 1996.They have the most varied movie listings, including classics, European films, alternative productions and the latest releases. It is located in Carrer de Villarroel.
7. Cine Renoir. This chain of independent movie theaters is present in several cities , including Barcelona. It offers national and European productions and is aimed to an audience that loves alternative films. They do not project the most recent releases or big productions, but the film selection is so good that it deserves a visit. It is located in calle Florida Blanca.
