The Catalan capital also welcomes people from different cities of Spain as well as from Latin America. If your intention is to be able to communicate with a large part of the population, Spanish is, without a doubt, the most recommended language.
While most of the population is fluent in Spanish, many feel more comfortable speaking Catalan. Beyond knowing what the official or dominant language is, you must be very sure of what is your purpose. If you are looking to make a good impression with the locals, it will always be a great idea to learn basic and polite phrases in Catalan.
Studying in Barcelona
Barcelona is perfect for those who want to learn Catalan as well as for those who want to learn Spanish. It is wisest to study one language at a time. Otherwise, the similarity between both languages will make the student end up confused.
Although Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, Catalan is not only limited to Barcelona. In Spain, it is the official language of three regions: Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Outside the country, it is the language used in Andorra and some parts of France and Italy. It will be very useful for frequent travelers.
Know the Catalan Culture
Catalonia is one of the most independent regions of Spain and with a very strong identity. Locals are proud of being both Catalan and Spanish and language is an intrinsic part of the area’s identity.
You will be able to understand and enjoy of the city, its essence and its people without need of being fluent in Catalan. But if the reason for learning the language is to feel more in tune with our society, then Catalan is the language to learn.
Communicate without limits
Visitors who speak Spanish will not have any limitations in the city. 98% of the population speaks Spanish fluently and, because it is the official language of Spain, all signs and signals are usually written both in Spanish and in Catalan.
If you are not fluent in any of the two official languages, but speak English fluently, you will be able communicate without any problem. Although not all the population speaks the language, there is a large part that does. You will surely find someone around willing to help you in whatever you need.
If you do not speak Spanish, English or Catalan, it is best to learn a little of any one. This way, it will be easier for you to move and enjoy Barcelona. However, do not let language be a limiting factor to come and live an adventure in Barcelona.
